What is the advantage of Auto-Pay?: Automated payment programs offer you the convenience of making time-sensitive payments without having to write a check. Even if you are away, your tax bill will automatically be paid from your checking or savings account.

1. What is the advantage of Auto-Pay?: Automated payment programs offer you the convenience of making time-sensitive payments without having to write a check. Even if you are away, your tax bill will automatically be paid from your checking or savings account.

2. How secure and reliable is Auto-Pay?: Auto-Pay is a secure, reliable way to pay your property tax bill. When you authorize Auto-Pay, you are giving the City of East Lansing permission to withdraw the amount of your City tax bill from your checking or savings account. The withdrawals are done by your financial institution and will be reflected on your monthly bank statement.

3. Does the City charge a fee for this service?: No, the City of East Lansing does not charge a fee for this service. Please check with your financial institution to confirm whether automatic clearing house (ACH) transactions are provided as a free service.

4. Will I still receive a tax bill?: Yes, but your tax bill should only be used for record keeping purposes. Tax bills are mailed on July 1 and December 1 of each year.

5. What happens if a payment is rejected?: Payments may be rejected by your financial institution due to insufficient funds, closed / unauthorized accounts or for other reasons. If this occurs, the City will apply a $35 fee to your tax bill. In addition, all applicable penalties and interest will be applied if your tax bill is not paid by the due date. In the event of a returned payment, electronic resubmission is not available.

6. What if my banking information changes?: Please notify the City of East Lansing’s Treasury Department of a change in banking information by resubmitting an enrollment form with your updated information, including the date the change is effective. Please allow 14 days for processing. If an automatic payment fails because the City was not informed of a bank account change, a $35 fee will be applied to your tax bill.
