Immediately following the Michigan State University men's NCAA Elite Eight basketball game on Sunday, March 31, a crowd gathered to celebrate the outcome of the game in East Lansing. The crowd assembled in the 200 block of Cedar Street and it is estimated to have consisted of 600 to 800 people at its peak.
Soon after the crowd gathered, a piece of furniture was set on fire in the middle of the roadway and individuals within the crowd began to throw glass bottles into the air. Police officers moved into the crowd to secure the area. Two individuals from the crowd were arrested on disorderly conduct charges. Shortly after these arrests were made, the crowd began to disperse and the fire was extinguished. The crowd dispersed within one hour of its gathering. No chemical crowd management devices were utilized during this incident.
The individuals arrested include a 20-year-old man from Marshall, Mich. and a 20-year-old man from Ada, Mich.
Unrelated to the crowd on Cedar Street, the East Lansing Police Department and East Lansing Fire Department responded to 11 additional small fires throughout the City. Crowds were not gathered around these fires.
