UPDATE (1/29/18): The East Lansing Hannah Community Center will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 30; however, the East Lansing Public Library will remain open to serve as a warming center for the day.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — With extremely cold temperatures in the forecast for this week, community members are advised that the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road, and East Lansing Public Library, 950 Abbot Road, will be available as warming centers for those in need.
These warming centers will be available through Thursday, Jan. 31 during regular business hours. ELHCC’s hours are 6 a.m.-10 p.m., Monday-Friday; and ELPL’s hours are 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Monday-Thursday. These warming centers are temporary, short-term places for people to warm up and charge their devices. The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) will be available to transport individuals to long-term, overnight shelters as needed.
In addition to the East Lansing warming locations, the City of Lansing Office of Emergency Management has published a list of warming centers and shelters in the Lansing area.
According to the latest updates from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the coldest temperatures are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. Wind chills could get as low as -33 degrees Fahrenheit. Community members are encouraged to bundle up and limit time outside. Community members are also reminded to only use heating devices in homes that are designed for indoor use. City officials are continuously monitoring the weather forecasts/conditions and will provide updates as necessary.
