EAST LANSING, Mich. – With the East Lansing income tax slated to go into effect on January 1, 2019, the City of East Lansing will be hosting a series of income tax meetings this November and recently released employer withholding forms and guides, which are available at www.cityofeastlansing.com/incometax.
The first of the income tax meetings will be for employers and the following two meetings will be for residents and employees who work in East Lansing. The meetings will take place at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC), 819 Abbot Road, on the following dates:
- Tuesday, Nov. 13; 2-4 p.m.; ELHCC’s Banquet Hall (a meeting for employers)
- Tuesday, Nov. 20; 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; ELHCC’s Executive Conference Room (a meeting for residents/employees)
- Wednesday, Nov. 28; 6-8 p.m.; ELHCC’s Banquet Hall (a meeting for residents/employees)
The meeting for employers on Nov. 13 will include a welcome/introduction from City officials, a brief overview of the employer withholding forms and an opportunity for questions from the audience. Employers with employees working within the City of East Lansing are required to begin withholding the applicable income tax from employees beginning in January 2019. The amount of tax withheld shall be remitted to the City on either a monthly or quarterly basis depending on the total withheld in any given month. Employers with East Lansing residents as employees working outside the City of East Lansing are not required to withhold, but the City does encourage courtesy withholding for these employees.
The meetings for residents and employees on Nov. 20 and Nov. 28 will include a welcome/introduction from City officials, a brief overview of the income tax and details on what individuals will need to do. There will also be an opportunity for questions from the audience at these meetings.
In addition to the employer withholding forms and guides, updated FAQs and income tax boundary maps can be found at www.cityofeastlansing.com/incometax. The income tax boundary maps show the area where the income tax will be assessed and the interactive GIS map is searchable by address, parcel number and MSU building name.
