EAST LANSING, Mich. – In honor of Veterans Day, community members and members of the media are invited to attend a brief wreath laying ceremony at East Lansing’s Medal of Honor Memorial and Veterans Monument on Friday, Nov. 9 at 3 p.m. in front of the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC), 819 Abbot Road.
The City of East Lansing and the Lansing-based 1st Battalion, 24th Marines will be laying wreaths to honor all of the brave men and women who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces, including U.S. Marine Corps Reserve 2nd Lt. Sherrod E. Skinner, Jr.
2nd Lt. Skinner was an East Lansing war hero who received the Medal of Honor posthumously for bravery exhibited during the Korean War. The memorial honoring 2nd Lt. Skinner was dedicated in front of ELHCC on Veterans Day in 2013.
Four years later; on November 6, 2017; a Veterans Monument was installed adjacent to the Medal of Honor Memorial to honor all veterans from the East Lansing community and memorialize those who gave their lives while serving.
The Medal of Honor Memorial and Veterans Monument were made possible by community funds raised by the City of East Lansing and East Lansing Rotary Club. Community members can learn more here.
