[ARCHIVED] ELPL to Host Special Children’s Book Program featuring “The Hyena Scientist”

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Public Library (ELPL) is excited to host children's author Sy Montgomery and Michigan State University zoologist and professor, Dr. Kay Holekamp, on Thursday, April 26 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. for a special, free community program. Montgomery and Holekamp will discuss their new book, "The Hyena Scientist," which delves into the world of one of history's most misunderstood and hated animals.

Schuler Books will have copies of "The Hyena Scientist" on sale at the program for $20.13 (price includes tax) and Montgomery and Holekamp will sign books after the program. All ages are welcome; however, the book's intended audience is elementary school to middle school-aged children.

“I met Dr. Holekamp seven years ago when I moved to East Lansing,” said ELPL Director Kristin Shelley. “Her stories of her camp in Africa, where she studies hyenas, are fascinating and have given me a newfound respect for these misunderstood animals. I am thrilled that ELPL is hosting this special program.”

More About the Book
This myth busting new addition to the critically acclaimed Scientists in the Field series by Sibert Medal-winning team Sy Montgomery and Nic Bishop is perfect for nonfiction readers looking for more female scientist narratives, or a fresh perspective on an underrepresented animal—Hyenas!

Timely and inspiring, “The Hyena Scientist” sets the record straight about one of history’s most hated and misunderstood mammals, while featuring the groundbreaking, pioneering research of a female scientist in a predominately male field: Dr. Kay Holekamp.

As a scientist and zoologist studying one of the only mammalian societies led entirely by females, Dr. Holekamp has made it her life’s work to understand hyenas. As evidenced by Dr. Holekamp’s research, hyenas are fascinating, complex creatures that are playful, social and highly intelligent—almost nothing like the mangy monsters of pop culture lore.

Author of more than 22 books, Sy Montgomery was a National Book Award finalist and has been honored with a Sibert Medal as well as many other awards. Nic Bishop is the photographer of many acclaimed books for children, including the Sibert-winning “Kakapo Rescue.”
