EAST LANSING, Mich. – The City of East Lansing is now accepting applications for its 2015 Emerging Leaders Program.
The application is available online or can be requested by sending an email to firstname.lastname@example.org. Applications must be submitted by 4 p.m. on Friday, January 30, 2015 for consideration.
The East Lansing Emerging Leaders Program is a six-week course in civic engagement designed to build tomorrow’s leaders today. Participants will hone leadership and public service skills by learning about a variety of course topics taught by a range of local business, community and government leaders. Many past graduates have gone on to serve as members of neighborhood associations, City boards and commissions and even the East Lansing City Council.
“The Emerging Leaders Program was extremely worthwhile,” said Jack Cahill, a participant of the 2013 program. “I met the people who make East Lansing work and developed a greater appreciation for the obstacles and opportunities that confront them. I also appreciated meeting other members of the program who are taking an active interest in the future of our community.”
“The Emerging Leaders Program was created to educate citizens about the importance of local government and civic engagement,” said East Lansing City Manager George Lahanas. “It is our hope that the 2015 participants will be inspired to take an active role in local government and/or the East Lansing community upon graduating from the program.”
All applicants must be East Lansing residents (either homeowner or renter) aged 18 years or older. There is no charge to participate. Selected participants will be notified the week of Feb. 9 and sessions will take place Feb. 19-April 16. To graduate, participants will be expected to accumulate 10 hours of class time and five hours of out-of-class time. Participants will also be expected to complete a group proposal for a community building project. A graduation ceremony will take place on Tuesday, April 21 at an East Lansing City Council meeting.
