EAST LANSING, Mich. – This morning at approximately 5:30 a.m., officers with the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) were out on foot in the northwest quadrant of the City in the area where many of the recent vehicle larcenies have occurred over the past week. ELPD increased patrols, including officers with the ELPD Detective Bureau and uniformed officers, in that area as a result of the larcenies.
During the foot patrol, officers witnessed several juvenile subjects in the area, some of which were known to the officers. When ELPD tried to make contact, at least seven subjects left the area in at least two vehicles.
A short time later, when ELPD tried to initiate traffic stops on the vehicles for investigatory purposes, both vehicles failed to stop and two different pursuits occurred. One ended at Cedar Street and I-96 and the other ended near the intersection of Waverly and Lansing roads. Five of the seven subjects fled from the vehicles. A K9 track took place, but officers were unable to locate the subjects who fled.
Both of the vehicles had been stolen in East Lansing within the last couple days. All seven subjects have been identified. The two female juveniles who remained in the vehicles have been released to their parents. The ELPD Detective Bureau is actively working this case and working to locate the outstanding subjects.
