EAST LANSING, Mich. — A natural gas main leak confirmed by the East Lansing Fire Department (ELFD) earlier today near the Grand River-Abbot intersection in East Lansing has been shut off. The leak was caused when construction crews working in the area struck an underground pipe.

Albert Avenue, between Abbot Road and Evergreen Avenue, and Evergreen Avenue, between Albert Avenue and Grand River Avenue, will remain temporarily closed as ELFD and Consumers Energy continue to monitor the situation. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to continue to avoid the immediate area until further notice.

Business owners in the immediate area are advised to call 911 if they smell natural gas inside their business. ELFD will be dispatched to the business to do air testing.

Prior to the leak shutoff, first responders did attempt to evacuate all businesses and residences within 300 feet of the incident.
