EAST LANSING, Mich. – The East Lansing Department of Public Works (DPW) has provided the following updates on ongoing construction projects in the City of East Lansing.
Local Streets Project Update
Work on the local streets project in the Chesterfield Hills area is ongoing. The water main on Glenmoor Road is currently going through the City’s testing requirements and the storm sewer work is completed. Beginning the week of Aug. 1, manhole covers on Highland Avenue, Oak Ridge Avenue and West View Avenue will be lowered in preparation for asphalt milling scheduled for Aug. 5-6. The contractor will also begin concrete removals on Highland Avenue, Oak Ridge Avenue and West View Avenue next week in preparation for replacing sidewalk ramps and related curb and gutter repairs. Traffic will be maintained, but access will be minimized due to additional traffic controls. Residents who live on these streets where work is being completed can proceed around the barricading, but should do so with caution as crews will be working.
CDBG Sidewalk Project
The first phase of the 2016 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) sidewalk construction project along Park Lane was completed today, July 29. Beginning Monday, Aug. 1, the next phase of the project will begin at the Burcham-Abbot intersection. During this phase, ADA sidewalk ramp upgrades will take place in all four corners of the intersection. This phase will take approximately two weeks to complete.
During the first week of this phase, Burcham Drive, between Grove Street and Abbot Road, will be closed so that construction crews can complete the sidewalk ramp upgrades on the east side of the intersection. A detour will be in place directing westbound Burcham Drive traffic intending to turn north on Abbot Road to Grove Street and then to Library Lane. Southbound Abbot Road traffic looking to navigate east on Burcham Drive will be detoured east on Library Lane to Grove Street back to Burcham Drive. No parking will be permitted along Library Lane and Grove Street, between Abbot Road and Burcham Drive, for the duration of the detour. No parking signs will be in place. Northbound Abbot Road traffic will be shifted into the center turn lane through the intersection at Burcham Drive.
Upon the completion of the east side, construction crews will re-open the Burcham-Abbot intersection and a lane shift will be put into place moving southbound traffic into the center turn lane through the intersection. During this phase, the driveway to the East Lansing Hannah Community Center will be closed to allow crews to replace the driveway approach and upgrade the sidewalk ramps on the west side of the intersection. ELHCC patrons will need to access the parking lot via the rear entrance on Evergreen Avenue via Fern Street. Signs will be in place directing traffic to the alternate entrance. Please see the attached map for the ELHCC alternate entrance route.
The CDBG sidewalk improvements are part of an ongoing program to improve pedestrian access and safety throughout the City of East Lansing. The patience of the community is greatly appreciated.
Consumers Energy Project on Hagadorn Road
As part of the ongoing gas main replacement project on Hagadorn Road, Consumers Energy will be reducing traffic to one lane in each direction between Snyder Road and Old Canton Lane beginning at 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 1. The roadway will be open to normal traffic by the end of the day, with single lane closures resuming during working hours for the remainder of the project. The project is slated for completion by Aug. 19. Motorists are encouraged to use caution when traveling through the area.
