[ARCHIVED] East Lansing Winter Storm Update

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The East Lansing Department of Public Works crews completed the clearing of major streets late yesterday morning and completed the clearing of local streets at 6:45 p.m. last night. All City-maintained sidewalks have also been cleared.

Crews will be cleaning up trouble spots and salting hills and stop sign areas throughout the day today.

“We appreciate the long hours our crews put in to keep East Lansing’s streets and City-maintained sidewalks safe and passable,” said East Lansing City Manager George Lahanas. “We would also like to thank community members for their cooperation with the on-street parking ban. It allowed the crews to work more efficiently.”

Snow and Ice Removal Requirements for Property Owners
East Lansing property owners (includes residents, business owners, landlords/renters and any other owners of property) are encouraged to keep the City’s snow and ice removal requirements in mind for sidewalks adjacent to their properties.

Snow that accumulates before noon on a sidewalk must be cleared by midnight the same day and snow that accumulates after noon on a sidewalk must be cleared by midnight of the following day. For snow showers that occur on more than one consecutive day, snow must be cleared by the above stated times or within 48 hours after the first snowfall began, whichever is sooner. Ice should be cleared or an abrasive (salt, sand, etc.) should be applied within 12 hours of formation. Enforcement begins today.

The City has heard some resident feedback about snow deposited into driveways/sidewalks by snow plows. During the course of normal snow plow operations, snow placed in residents’ driveways is unavoidable. The plows are angled to the right for plowing from the center line of the street to the curb. For this reason, a certain amount of snow will be deposited in driveways or sidewalks in close proximity to the street. It is the responsibility of property owners to remove this snow.
