EAST LANSING, Mich. – East Lansing City Manager George Lahanas has announced that Jeff Murphy will serve as the new chief of the East Lansing Police Department (ELPD).

Chief Murphy has been serving as the interim chief of ELPD for the past six months and, prior to that, served as deputy chief of the department. His dedicated service to ELPD dates back to February 1987.

“Chief Murphy has risen through the ranks over his 29 years with the department by working hard and proving himself to be a dedicated and highly-skilled professional,” said Lahanas. “We have the utmost confidence in his leadership abilities and look forward to his continued achievements as the new chief of the East Lansing Police Department.”

Chief Murphy has received several promotions over his years of service. He has served as supervisor of the ELPD night shift patrol, accident team, Conflict Management Team, East Lansing Jail, Special Response Team (SRT), Crime Scene Investigation unit, ELPD Detective Bureau and ELPD K9 Unit. He was promoted to sergeant in September 1998, lieutenant in June 2011 (at which time he also became an SRT commander), captain in July 2012, deputy chief in February 2015 and interim chief in July 2015. Chief Murphy holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Central Michigan University.

“I’m honored to serve the citizens of East Lansing in this new capacity. It’s a tremendous responsibility and one I take very seriously,” said Chief Murphy. “I’m also honored to continue to serve alongside the hard-working and dedicated officers who make up the East Lansing Police Department.”

The official swearing-in ceremony for ELPD Chief Jeff Murphy will take place on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 2:30 p.m. in ELPD’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC). Members of the media are welcome to attend and can check in at the Police Desk upon arrival for directions to the EOC. ELPD is located at 409 Park Lane.
