EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) and Michigan State University Police Department (MSUPD) have both received reports of phone scams involving student victims.
Students have reported that they have received calls in which the caller says they have a warrant out for their arrest and that they need to pay fines immediately over the phone or they will be arrested. These calls are scams, especially when the caller demands the person pay the fine with a Green Dot or other prepaid card.
ELPD and MSUPD do not call people and demand that fines be paid over the phone.
