[ARCHIVED] East Lansing Celebrates Parks, Recreation & Arts Day at the East Lansing Farmers Market This Weekend

Explore, Engage, Enjoy: Parks, Recreation & Arts, City of East Lansing

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Community members are invited to celebrate Parks, Recreation and Arts Day at the East Lansing Farmers Market (ELFM) this Sunday, July 16.

The ELFM is held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. every Sunday from the beginning of June through the end of October in Valley Court Park, 280 Valley Court.

Parks, Recreation and Arts Day at the ELFM will include activities suitable for all ages, from interactive art projects to recreational games, theater and music. The special day will also include free giveaways, including a tote bag, stickers and East Lansing Family Aquatic Center passes, while supplies last.

Acoustic musician Dan Dan Laird will perform from 10-11:50 a.m., followed by a special performance by All-of-us Express Children’s Theater from 11:50 a.m.-12:10 p.m. Blues musician Deacon Earl will take the stage from 12:10-2 p.m.

Art activities will include rock painting for the Kindness Rocks Garden Project. Community members are also invited to contribute a short phrase that represents their identity, or an inspirational quote, to the new Community Fingerprint Project. Once completed, the artwork will be hung at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center to show the interconnectedness of the community.

Other activities at this year’s Parks, Recreation and Arts Day will include hula hoop classes, beginning at 11:30 a.m., and Nerf games from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Additionally, families will be able to register children for the free Power of Produce (POP) Club, which provides vouchers for fresh fruits and vegetables at each weekly market. The POP Club encourages children to enjoy fresh produce by trying new foods twice. The POP Club also provides educational activities, demonstrations and opportunities to interact with local food growers.

East Lansing’s Parks, Recreation and Arts Day coincides with the national recognition of Parks and Recreation Month, which has been celebrated annually during the month of July since 1985. This year’s theme is “Where Community Grows.”
