City to Welcome African Leaders from Mandela Washington Fellowship This Summer

African Perspectives on Civic Engagement July 7 and July 24 East Lansing Hannah Community Center

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The City of East Lansing is pleased to welcome young African leaders participating in the 2023 Civic Engagement Leadership Institute this summer. 

The City’s Prime Time Seniors Program has partnered with Michigan State University’s Global Studies in the Arts and Humanities Program to host a cohort of Africa’s emerging leaders from the Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative. 

Community members are invited to attend the African Perspectives on Civil Engagement series at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center. Both programs run from 1:30-3 p.m.

  • July 7 - “Democracy and Education in Africa” 
  • July 24 - “Climate Change, Sustainability and Environmental Justice in Africa”

“We are so excited to have this unique opportunity in East Lansing to learn from young leaders committed to civic engagement in their home countries,” Prime Time Seniors Program Interim Director Lisa Richey said.
