EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Independent Police Oversight Commission (ELIPOC) will present its first annual report to the East Lansing City Council at the City Council’s meeting on Tuesday, June 20. Council meets at 7 p.m. at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road.
ELIPOC was established by the Council in 2021 to increase accountability and strengthen conditions leading to trust between the East Lansing Police Department and the community. As part of its mandate, ELIPOC reviews and makes recommendations about police department policies, practices and procedures and provides a means for prompt, impartial and fair review of complaints.
The first annual report from ELIPOC to Council contains seven sections, providing recommendations from the Commission. In addition to review of complaints made during 2022, topics covered in the report include the April 25, 2022 shooting incident at Meijer, use of force/response to resistance, encounters with individuals in crisis, racial disparities in policing and community input.
