EAST LANSING, Mich. — The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) is pleased to announce that it has achieved accreditation through the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police (MACP). The process is voluntary.

The process for accreditation is a lengthy one, requiring police agencies in Michigan to comply with 108 standards and best practices established by the Michigan Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission. ELPD began the process in January 2021 by examining and in some cases rewriting written directives, policies and procedures. Proofs of compliance must be provided to show that the standards are being met.

An on-site assessment at ELPD occurred October 24-25, 2022. Two assessors visited ELPD to conduct an in-depth inspection of the department, its written directives and proofs associated with accreditation. The on-site assessment also included interviews with City of East Lansing staff and multiple ride-a-longs with officers.

“The East Lansing Police Department is proud to have earned accreditation from the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police. Accreditation is a way to ensure that we are serving the people of East Lansing in a transparent and accountable way that aligns with our community values,” ELPD Police Chief Kim Johnson said.

At the MACP Winter Professional Conference held in February 2023, ELPD was unanimously approved for accreditation by the MACP Board of Commissioners. Of the more than 600 law enforcement agencies in the state of Michigan, ELPD joins just 57 others that have earned full accreditation.
