This is the fifth year that the MLK Commission has hosted the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Art Contest, providing an opportunity for local artists to showcase their talents, while also honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

With this year’s contest, artists were tasked with creating a piece of art to accompany the theme, “Now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.” --Martin Luther King Jr., along with a 250-word narrative explaining their piece’s relation to social injustice and inequity.

Of the 14 entries submitted by local student and adult artists, one winner was selected in each of the following categories:

  • middle school (grades 6-8)
  • high school (grades 9-12)
  • adult (open)

The winner in the middle school category is Luca Grace Lommatzsch. The winner in the high school category is Sarah Ann Sochay. The winner in the adult category is Travon Hoskins. Images of the winners’ artwork and narratives can be found online here: https://mlkmidmichigan.com
