EAST LANSING, Mich. — The deadline for filing 2022 City of East Lansing income tax returns is May 1, 2023.

This deadline applies to all residents and non-resident individuals along with any calendar year businesses. All businesses operating within the City of East Lansing are required to file an income tax return in addition to withholding income taxes from their employees working within the City of East Lansing.

If a return is prepared by an income tax professional, their software may be able to e-file on their client’s behalf. All other taxpayers, including the users of at-home tax preparation software, are not able to e-file their 2022 East Lansing returns. These forms must be printed and mailed to:

East Lansing Income Tax Department
P.O. Box 526
Eaton Rapids, MI 48827

Returns can also be dropped off at the Treasurer’s Office on the first floor of City Hall, 410 Abbot Road, during business hours, or placed in the blue Treasurer’s Office drop box in the north parking lot at City Hall.

Individuals whose adjusted gross income is less than $5,000 and who do not have a personal exemption due to being claimed by another individual are exempt from the East Lansing income tax. They should include a copy of the first page of their 2022 State of Michigan income tax return with their 2022 East Lansing return as substantiation.

For those who need additional time to complete their return, an extension can be filed, which will extend the due date for filing returns to October 31, 2023. An EL-7004 “Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File Certain Returns” form must be submitted to extend the period to file. This extension only extends the time to file the return, not to pay the amount due. If it is anticipated that a payment will be owed on the return, the amount due must be estimated, and payment must be submitted, along with the extension form by May 1, 2023. Failure to do so will result in a late fee. This form is available at www.cityofeastlansing.com/incometax under the notation “2022 EL-7004 Extension to File – For all Types of Filers” on the forms section of the webpage.

Questions should be directed to East Lansing Income Tax Administrator Jill Rhode at (517) 319-6862 or incometax@cityofeastlansing.com
