EAST LANSING, Mich. — Community members of all ages and skill levels are invited to make their mark on the MSU Drawing Marathon – an annual non-stop drawing extravaganza taking place on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
This free event is brought to the community by a collaboration between the MSU Broad Art Museum; MSU Department of Art, Art History and Design; and the City of East Lansing. It will be taking place on BOTH sides of Grand River Avenue, including the MSU Broad Art Museum, 547 E. Circle Drive, and the 400 and 500 block alleys of downtown East Lansing.
The event will feature drawing stations, guided and collaborative drawing activities, costumed models and live, performance-inspired drawing prompts. Additionally, the Associated Student of Michigan State University (ASMSU) will be collaborating with City staff to host a community painting activity in the 400 block alley of downtown East Lansing in an effort to beautify the retaining walls surrounding the recently installed Mental Health Awareness Murals.
"The Drawing Marathon reminds us of the many ways art can bring communities together. We are excited to collaborate with the Department of Art, Art History, and Design and the City of East Lansing to offer this free community drawing experience,” said MSU Broad Art Museum Director of Education Michelle Word. “We provide the supplies – you draw! From our first scribbles to a carefully drawn figure study, we can all make our mark, and the Drawing Marathon features over ten different artmaking stations, so there is something for everyone!”
“This event is a part of our continued efforts to strengthen and enhance our collaborations with various MSU partners, while also helping to activate downtown spaces and promote downtown businesses,” said East Lansing Arts Programming & Placemaking Specialist Wendy Sylvester-Rowan. “We hope to see a great show of community members at this free, fun celebration of creativity in our vibrant university community.”
