EAST LANSING, Mich. — For residents looking to reduce their household waste and become better recyclers, the City of East Lansing has launched the Recycle Coach app.

“We are excited to launch this new, customized app, which will transform how we communicate local curbside collection, waste and recycling information to our residents,” said East Lansing Environmental Specialist Cliff Walls. “Beyond that, the platform includes engagement and educational tools to help residents manage and correctly recycle or dispose of their waste.”

Residents can access Recycle Coach from their desktop computers and mobile devices. These platforms make it easy for people to get local disposal information for thousands of household items when they need it.

The Recycle Coach app allows residents to:

  • Stay organized with custom curbside collection calendars (recycling, garbage, yard waste, etc.).
  • Receive collection reminders and real-time updates on service disruptions.
  • Become recycling experts with a comprehensive “What Goes Where?” search tool, including local disposal information and collection requirements for common and uncommon items.
  • Take the “We Wanted to Know” weekly quizzes for useful recycling tips and tricks.
  • Help reduce the amount of contamination in the curbside recycling stream by making informed recycling decisions.

“Ultimately, Recycle Coach takes the guesswork out of recycling, empowering residents to make smarter disposal decisions and take an active approach to reducing household waste,” said Walls. “Our hope is that this will result in higher recycling rates and less contamination in our recycling stream – a win-win for everyone.”

The Recycle Coach app can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. For East Lansing residents seeking to access Recycle Coach through a desktop monitor, it is also available at www.cityofeastlansing.com/recycle.
