EAST LANSING, Mich. — The City of East Lansing’s November 2, 2021 General Election results have been certified by the Ingham County Board of Canvassers and the administration of the oath of office for the newly-elected East Lansing City Councilmembers will take place next week.
East Lansing City Clerk Jennifer Shuster will administer the oath of office to the City Councilmembers-elect at Council’s meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m. at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road. The City Councilmembers-elect are Ron Bacon, George Brookover and Dana Watson.
Bacon and Watson are the first two African Americans to be elected to the East Lansing City Council in its history.
In 2020, Bacon and Watson were appointed to fill vacant positions on City Council and made history by becoming the first two African Americans to serve on Council since the 1970’s. The first African American to serve on the East Lansing City Council was Thelma Evans, who was appointed in 1973 to serve out an unexpired term on Council.
Following the oath of office, the East Lansing City Council will elect the Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem and the oath of office will be administered for those leadership positions.
All City Council meetings are open to the public and are livestreamed and can be played back via the City’s public meeting portal: https://cityofeastlansing.civicweb.net/Portal/. If attending the meeting in person, masks are required.
