EAST LANSING, Mich. — With both the Michigan State University vs. University of Michigan football game and Halloween taking place this weekend, the City of East Lansing encourages all East Lansing community members and out-of-town Spartan and Wolverine fans to celebrate safely and responsibly.
Here are a few things to keep in mind for those who will be tailgating, watching the game and/or participating in Halloween celebrations in the off-campus community:
- Open alcohol is not permitted in any public place in the City of East Lansing, including streets, sidewalks, parks and other public property.
- Those who choose to consume alcohol are encouraged to eat before or while they drink and to drink in moderation to help limit the negative effects of alcohol.
- It is illegal for individuals under the age of 21 to drink alcohol.
- It is illegal to drive while intoxicated or impaired by alcohol, a controlled substance or other intoxicating substances. Arrangements should be made for a designated driver.
- Individuals should always call 911 if a friend needs medical help. Michigan’s medical amnesty law protects underage drinkers from criminal prosecution if they seek medical assistance for health care concerns related to alcohol use. Learn more about medical amnesty.
- Setting fires in the community is dangerous and places an unnecessary burden on the City’s critical emergency services. Anyone caught setting a fire could face arson charges and/or other charges. If community members see someone starting a fire, they should call 911.
- Individuals should be mindful of their neighbors by keeping noise to a minimum throughout the day and night. Noise violations could result in a civil infraction or misdemeanor charge. Learn more about the City’s noise ordinance and other need-to-know ordinances at https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/390/Need-to-Know-Ordinances.
- The COVID-19 pandemic is not over, and healthcare workers continue to be overwhelmed. It’s more important than ever to be safe and responsible when celebrating.
