[ARCHIVED] East Lansing City Council Approves $10,000 to Support Mid-Michigan Expungement Clinic

EAST LANSING, Mich. — At East Lansing City Council’s virtual meeting this past Tuesday, June 8, City Council approved an allocation of up to $10,000 to support the Mid-Michigan Expungement Clinic that is being hosted by the East Lansing 54B District Court and Legal Services of South Central Michigan (LSSCM) on Saturday, June 19.

The $10,000 in funding will come from marihuana excise tax revenue and will assist up to 100 eligible participants with convictions in Ingham, Eaton and Clinton counties. The funds will help offset the cost of the Michigan State Police application filing fee, ICHAT records, court records and fingerprinting fees.

“I am very appreciative of City Council’s decision to allocate funds for the expungement clinic,” said East Lansing 54B District Court Administrator Nicole Evans. “With having eligible convictions set aside, I expect an exponential increase in talent for the job market, especially for public service positions and community volunteers.”

The Mid-Michigan Expungement Clinic will be held virtually via Zoom on Saturday, June 19 at 9 a.m. Participants will be paired into virtual meeting rooms with volunteer attorneys, working pro bono to review the participant’s ICHAT records and explain the expungement process. Community members interested in participating in the clinic can register on the 54B District Court website at Participant eligibility is determined by LSSCM and is based on income and conviction history.
