EAST LANSING, Mich. — Community members are invited to celebrate Black heritage with the City of East Lansing at the Children’s Cultural Concert Series, which will feature three Saturdays of live musical entertainment for children of all ages.
The concerts will take place at 11 a.m. at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC), 819 Abbot Road, on the following dates:
Saturday, Feb. 20 and Saturday, March 6 - Gratitude Steel Band
The Gratitude Steel Band from Dynamic School Assembles is a four-member group that brings Caribbean steel drums to life with wonderful melodies. The professional group offers amazing performances of Afro American and Caribbean music by unifying experiences of singing, drumming and dancing.
The Gratitude Steel band will perform the Caribbean steel drums on Saturday, Feb. 20 and will perform the African drum on Saturday, March 6.
Saturday, April 3 - Rodney Page
Rodney Page is a violinist, composer, recording artist, conductor and performer, who has a unique, energetic style that ranges from classical music to pop music. For more than 20 years, Page has touched countless audiences with his passion and artistic drive for music.
In an effort to make the concert series as safe as possible for community members, musicians and City staff, several necessary COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place. Attendees will be given a health screening upon arrival and masks are required to enter. Several physical distancing measures will also be in place to maintain at least a six-foot distance between attendees that are not from the same household.
The concerts are free to attend, but pre-registration is required. Community members interested in attending can register by calling the ELHCC at (517) 333-2580 ext. 0 or online at RecTrac and searching “concert.” Online pre-registration is currently available for the Feb. 20 concert and pre-registration for the March 6 and April 3 concerts will be available beginning the week of Feb. 22.
Community members interested in attending the Saturday, Feb. 20 concert must pre-register by Friday, Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. and space is limited to 50 attendees. Additionally, those who attend will receive a take-home activity kit that is related to the performance.
