[ARCHIVED] City Seeks Community Input on Future Use of Bailey Community Center Building

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Community members are invited to participate in two community input meetings regarding the future use of the Bailey Community Center on Monday, April 27 and Monday, May 4 at 7 p.m. at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road.

The community input sessions are being held to facilitate open dialogue and solicit community feedback on possible concepts and ideas that residents have for the future use of the building/property. Participants are encouraged to attend both sessions, if possible, as the sessions are designed to build upon each other. The meetings will be professionally facilitated by Doak Bloss.

After these meetings are completed, staff will return to the East Lansing City Council with a recommendation on next steps.

All community members are welcome to attend and are encouraged to RSVP by calling (517) 319-6930 or sending an email to

Following several months of discussion, East Lansing City Council made the decision in January to move forward with staff’s recommendation to discontinue the City’s early age childcare program – the primary user of the Bailey Community Center. Building costs and childcare costs were the primary reasons for Council’s decision. The program and building are slated to close September 4, 2015.

The City has now moved forward with a public input process to determine the future use of the building/property. It is important to note that the park will not be impacted by any future use; it will remain a community park. The hope is that the public input process will result in a plan for the building/property that the community can support.
