[ARCHIVED] City of East Lansing Office Closures, Local State of Emergency Extended through Friday, May 29

EAST LANSING, Mich. — In light of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s extension of the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order to slow the spread of COVID-19, City of East Lansing offices will remain temporarily closed to the public through at least Friday, May 29, with a tentative re-opening date of Monday, June 1.

Additionally, East Lansing Mayor Ruth Beier has extended the City’s local state of emergency declaration through Friday, May 29.

Offices that will remain closed to the public through at least Friday, May 29 include East Lansing City Hall, the East Lansing Department of Public Works (including the recycling drop-off site), the East Lansing 54B District Court, the East Lansing Public Library and the East Lansing Parking Office. The temporary closures of the East Lansing Hannah Community Center and East Lansing Prime Time Seniors’ Program have been further extended through Sunday, July 12, with a tentative re-opening on Monday, July 13.

During the City’s extended office closures, essential services will continue to be maintained, including police, fire, EMS, trash and recycling collection, water services and wastewater management. East Lansing City Council and boards and commissions meetings will continue to either be held electronically as needed or canceled through the end of the month. Meeting details and public meeting notices for electronic meetings will continue to be posted as they are finalized at www.cityofeastlansing.com/ElectronicMeetings.

Additional reminders and updates from the City of East Lansing are below:

  • All regularly scheduled City events have been canceled or postponed through at least May 29 and some event cancellations extend beyond that date, including the Summer Solstice Jazz Festival and Recycle! East Lansing. A virtual East Lansing Art Festival will take place on Saturday, May 16: http://www.elartfest.com/virtual-festival.
  • A second round of no-fee yard waste collection will be offered on the City’s east side (homes east of Abbot Road) on Monday, May 11 and on the City’s west side (homes west of Abbot Road) on Monday, May 18. Advance requests and City yard waste bags/stickers are not required on no-fee days, but all other yard waste guidelines do apply. Learn more.
  • The City’s playground equipment, outdoor sports courts, outdoor pavilions/shelters, park bathrooms and the Northern Tail Dog Park remain closed. Additional Parks, Recreation & Arts updates will be provided next week.
  • Permits (new and existing) for open burning and recreational fires continue to be suspended. This does not include gas or charcoal grills for cooking.
  • With construction permitted to resume across the state, the issuance of building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical permits and inspections resumed on Thursday, May 7. Office staff will be limited and can be reached at (517) 319-6871 or (517) 319-6810. Permits and inspections can also be requested online: https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/648/Building-Information. Rental inspections/re-inspections will continue to be canceled through May 29. Landlords can call (517) 319-6801 with questions.
  • Water service shutoffs will continue to be temporarily suspended/delayed during the local state of emergency.
