EAST LANSING, Mich. — A mailer was recently sent to several East Lansing households from a company advertising upcoming informational sessions in which residents can learn how to make thousands of dollars by renting out their homes during football weekends and other big MSU weekends.
The City of East Lansing would like to warn residents that renting without a rental license is a violation of City ordinances and fines can be issued for every occasion where a home is rented. Additionally, there are occupancy restrictions for the number of unrelated persons that can rent a property in the City of East Lansing depending on the zoning district.
In addition to City ordinances, the rental of a home could be a violation of the mortgage and/or homeowners insurance, meaning if damage is caused to the property while being rented it may not be covered by insurance. Renters should also note that subleasing a rental could be a lease violation.
If residents have further questions regarding this matter, they can contact East Lansing Housing and University Relations Administrator Annette Irwin at (517) 319-6801.
