EAST LANSING, Mich. — At last night’s East Lansing City Council meeting, changes to the City of East Lansing’s fee schedule were approved that will result in a price reduction for City yard waste bags and stickers purchased by residents.
Beginning January 1, 2020, the cost of City yard waste bags and stickers will be reduced from $2 to $1.75. In addition to this cost reduction, the City of East Lansing plans to transition out of selling yard waste bags due to multiple factors:
- Vendors have increased the minimum quantity of bags that can be purchased in a custom order and the new minimum quantity requirements exceed the City’s storage capability.
- The cost for custom orders for bags has increased.
- Sticker sales have significantly outpaced bag sales in East Lansing over the past few fiscal years.
“By eliminating the sale of yard waste bags, the City will realize costs savings for material handling, storage and acquisition,” said East Lansing Environmental Services Administrator Cathy DeShambo. “These cost savings are being passed onto residents by reducing the cost of City yard waste bags and stickers.”
Yard waste bags will continue to be sold while supplies last, but a new order of bags will not be placed once the City’s current supply runs out. Community members can find a list of locations where City yard waste bags and stickers can be purchased here: www.cityofeastlansing.com/279/Carts-Bags-Sticker-Purchases. Yard waste stickers can be attached to store-bought paper yard waste bags, brush/limb bundles or a rigid, 32-gallon plastic container.
