EAST LANSING, Mich. — Community members are advised that the City of East Lansing’s Northern Tail Dog Park, located at 6400 Abbot Road, will be closed over the 2019-2020 winter season. The park is scheduled to be closed from December 2, 2019 to April 13, 2020, weather permitting.
The purpose for the seasonal closure of the Northern Tail Dog Park is to prevent considerable wear and tear to park grounds, which has occurred over past winter seasons due to park use during freeze-thaw periods and periods when the soil is wet and muddy.
The City has completed extensive work to improve drainage and restore grass at the park. In an effort to prevent a long-term closure, City staff plans to begin closing the park each winter season, similar to many other recreational facilities in the East Lansing community. Other park facilities that close over the winter months include the East Lansing Soccer Complex, the East Lansing Softball Complex, the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center and all bathrooms in City parks.
Signs will be installed at the park to notify park users of the upcoming seasonal closure.
“We appreciate the community’s understanding during this seasonal closure,” said East Lansing Parks, Recreation & Arts Director Tim McCaffrey. “This closure will ensure the long-term viability of the park and prevent the need for significant restoration in future years.”
