The Parks, Recreation & Arts Department offers quality childcare for children already enrolled in the Before & After School Childcare Program (B&A) on days when the schools have a half day or a full day off. Childcare is not offered on holidays. Parents will be emailed a registration form accompanying monthly bills for upcoming half day and break care. Parents will need to complete the form and payment to register.
Childcare is offered when the East Lansing Public Schools hold a half day of school in preparation for parent-teacher conferences (usually in October and March). Children are cared for at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center from 12:15-5:30 p.m. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from the community center on half days. Different activities are planned for each half day, including theme-based activities, gym games and arts and crafts. Children are required to bring a lunch.
Children will participate in numerous activities, including arts and crafts and special themed activities. All participants will receive a schedule of events via email after registration has closed.
The City of East Lansing ensures that the 1:18 state licensing ratio is met, including at least one staff member that has their current certification in CPR and First Aid. All staff members are required to obtain at least 16 hours of training related to school-age children. Program supervisors have had at least 12 semester hours of college credits in a child related field. Most child care aides currently attend college and are pursuing degrees in education, child development or nursing.
