K9 Unit

The East Lansing Police Department K9 Unit consists of four teams (one handler and one dog per team). The dogs include two German Shepherds (Quinn & Cezar), one German Shepherd/Belgian Malinois Mix (Ares) and one Belgian Malinois (Scott). Each K9 Unit team is trained to track suspects and to locate people and/or articles.

The K9 Unit is on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. K9 officers drive black, fully marked Chevy Tahoes.

Duties

The K9 Unit performs a variety of functions, including:
  • assisting in the prevention and detection of crime
  • bomb detection
  • building searches
  • locating lost or missing persons
  • narcotics detection
  • providing escort services
  • tracking and locating persons sought by police
