Car Seat Inspections

The East Lansing Police Department (ELPD) provides free car seat inspections to community members throughout the region. ELPD has an officer who serves as a Child Passenger Safety Technician, with certification through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Safe Kids Worldwide.

The Child Passenger Safety Technician will take parents through the steps of installing their car seat correctly and answer any questions they may have. Parents with children of any age are welcome to make an appointment. Learn more about how to prepare for the car seat inspection and what to expect during the inspection.

Child Passenger Safety Law

Michigan's Child Passenger Safety Law requires that children younger than age 4 ride in a car seat in the rear seat if the vehicle has a rear seat. If all available rear seats are occupied by children under 4, then a child under 4 may ride in a car seat in the front seat. A child in a rear-facing car seat may only ride in the front seat if the airbag is turned off.
