The Board of Review convenes in March to review the assessment roll of the city, hear complaints of property owners regarding their assessment and corrects the assessment roll where it is deemed just. It also convenes a short meeting in July and December for the purpose of making clerical corrections and changes to homestead status. Members are compensated at a per diem rate. The Board of Review consists of five members who serve three-year terms.

Due to the presence of the coronavirus in the community, the July Board of Review will hold a virtual meeting on July 21, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. to handle the matters normally handled at its July session, such as correction of clerical errors, granting principal residence exemptions, considering poverty exemption applications, etc. Under the Governor’s Executive Order 2020-87, the July Board of Review will also handle matters such as valuation and exemption appeals which are normally only handled at the March sessions of the Board of Review.  Appeals already denied by the Board of Review in March will not be reheard or reconsidered.  Because the status day for property taxes for 2020 was December 31, 2019 (before the presence of the coronavirus), any impact of the coronavirus on market conditions in 2020 does not affect 2020 assessments. Property owners can make written appeals or appeal virtually via the Zoom video communications platform (Link to join webinar: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86498928296Webinar ID: 864 9892 8296). 

Property owners wishing to make an appeal virtually via Zoom may call (517) 319-6880 for an appointment. Property owners wishing to appeal virtually are strongly encouraged to provide any documents associated with the appeal to Assessing Department staff prior to the meeting so that the documents can be provided to and considered by the Board of Review. Written appeals and documents associated with virtual appeals can be emailed (dlee@cityofeastlansing.com) or mailed to the following address:
