George M. Brookover is an East Lansing High School alumnus who then graduated in 1972 from Cornell University with a degree in Industrial and Labor Relations. He graduated from the University of Michigan Law School in 1975, after which he spent the first 16 years of his legal career at the Lansing law firm of Foster, Swift, Collins & Smith, P.C.
Mr. Brookover was first elected to the East Lansing City Council in November of 2021. He became Mayor in November of 2023.
Mr. Brookover was admitted to practice law in Michigan in 1975; admitted to the bar of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan in 1976; admitted to the bar of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit in 1980; and to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1981. He is a member of the Ingham County Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan.
Mr. Brookover formed his own firm in East Lansing in 1991. Currently, he specializes in general practice, general litigation, risk management and employment law.
Mr. Brookover has appeared and argued cases before the Michigan Court of Appeals, the Michigan Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
Mr. Brookover was on the School Board for the City of East Lansing from 2003 through 2011. During his tenure, he was president of the school board for three years. He is also a former member of the City of East Lansing Housing and Community Development Commission, former member and chairperson of the East Lansing Planning Commission and member of the initial City Committee to Study Student Riots (1989).
