Drug Drop OffThe East Lansing Police Department (ELPD), 409 Park Lane, offers a 24-hours-a-day collection program, where residents can properly dispose of controlled medications, unwanted firearms (long gun or handgun) and ammunition.

Firearm & Ammunition Disposal Program

The ELPD accepts any unwanted firearms (long gun or handgun) or ammunition at the ELPD desk 24 hours a day. Please specify if you want the firearm to be destroyed or if it can be converted to police department use. Controlled Medication Disposal Program
The ELPD accepts controlled medication at the 24-hour drop box located at the police desk to help prevent medications from ending up in the wrong hands or polluting ground water/landfills. The program is made possible by the Ingham County Health Department and a Pollution Prevention Grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. All personal information should be blacked out or removed.

The following controlled medications can be disposed:
  • anti-depressants
  • behavior modification medications
  • cough medications
  • pain relievers
  • sleep aids
The following can not be disposed:
  • all other prescription medications
  • bloody or infectious waste
  • insulin and inhalers
  • medicated ointments and lotions
  • needles, syringes, lancets, EpiPens
  • over-the-counter drugs
  • thermometers
  • vitamins and supplements
